Rural Payments Agency

Geographic Information Analyst

Manage, analyse and improve geo intelligence in a large, high profile organisation.

You’ll use the latest specialist software and help to enhance in-house GI capabilities as a Geographic Information (GI) Analyst with the Rural Payments Agency (RPA). The RPA supports the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to encourage a thriving farming and food sector and strong rural communities through delivery of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) scheme payments of over £3.5 billion per annum.

Geo data has an increasingly important bearing on the Agency’s work - and that of the Government as a whole. Managing a wide range of geo intelligence and data, you’ll enjoy a broad impact - from involvement in system developments for spatial datasets, to helping us establish and enhance our in-house capabilities. You will make excellent use of the very latest niche IT products and software. What’s more, you will enjoy excellent scope for development and progression, with a clear career path ahead.

You will be recognised as the subject matter expert on spatial data captured and used in Rural Land Register (RLR) maintenance activities. The RLR is the RPA’s corporate GI Systems spatial repository of rural land. Interrogating large databases, you will produce analysis and reports that are instrumental to ensuring quality, resolving issues and identifying improvements.

To join us, you will need to be an IT-savvy individual with an appropriate degree, plus a relevant professional track record. We will expect you to demonstrate the ability to apply technical GI knowledge in order to analyse complex spatial, imagery and data model problems. You’re able to use photo-interpretation and geo-processing to quickly identify key issues and produce practical solutions. Your technical skills include ESRI ArcGIS 10.1+; Safe FME desktop/server; macro development/scripting (ideally Python); Oracle Spatial database and PL/SQL coding for complex spatial queries. Great communication skills are equally important.

In return for your dedication, you will enjoy generous civil service benefits and excellent development opportunities.
