Transport for London

Road Space Manager - Graduate

Job role:

Road space managers are responsible for the movement of pedestrians, bikes, buses, cars and taxis around London’s roads.

When you join us as a graduate, you'll be involved in everything from traffic control to operational modelling. Over two years, you'll gain increasing levels of responsibility for a section of London's principle road network.

You'll play a central role in everything from monitoring, operating and reviewing traffic signals, to designing, planning and optimising new approaches to managing traffic and demand.

We'll also ensure that you also get experience of solving problems, presenting solutions and managing projects, as well as working with sophisticated modelling software and complex data. As part of that, we'll expect you to you to research and develop new techniques to manage the network more efficiently. Specifically, your key areas would be:

  • Traffic signal design - working on innovative designs to improve pedestrian access
  • World leading urban traffic control and Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technologies (SCOOT) - learning to use traffic control systems that allow us to optimise signals
  • Traffic modelling - gaining specialist skills in the use of complex modelling software
  • London Streets Traffic Control Centre - working at the heart of real-time signal control

Entry requirements

You'll must have a minimum 2:1 honours degree (or higher), in geography, engineering (any discipline), science (any discipline), maths, planning, or a related degree. You must also be able to:

  • Work on your own initiative, seeking out new opportunities for learning, career progression and challenges
  • Identify project goals and work towards them
  • Demonstrate a structured and methodical approach to tasks, identifying priorities and setting deadlines

If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
